So much is in the news and so many of us have even been effected first hand by the challenged economic situation. We read and see company employees up in arms because they were just laid off and no one is hiring. We hear about companies cutting back on insurance, perks, and in some cases even doing mandatory payroll decreases. Overall, so many companies are looking to find way to “trim” excess spending.
Corporations that are feeling the burn have to find a way to retain their top talent, as well as offer new-comers an incentive that will keep everyone in the conga line.
Many feel that training and development are the first items to be cut from the budget. However, companies that are forward-thinking are not cutting spending on training but in fact offering their employees the opportunity to learn more. Speaking first hand with a training department supervisor it was said that they have raised their budget in 2009-2010 on training and learning initiatives. Whoa! Talk about value! Take your key personnel and make sure they have the skills to be successful at their job and perhaps jobs to come.
Companies see an increase in their ROI by keeping employees up to date with the latest on desktop application and soft-skill training needed in the work place. Just because our economy is fractured does not mean we have to sit on our hands and wait and see what is going to happen next. Take the time to evaluate your employees and offer them the training skill they need. Instead of that report taking two days to compile why not learn how to properly use the application and reduce a couple of days to a couple of hours so that employee can then be a resource elsewhere.
Make that time-to-technology quicker and employee retention stronger. Not only will you see the benefit of training, but seeing a smile on your employees face while knowing that they are fully confident in their task-at-hand is priceless.

Tim Shell, President and CEO of ExecuTrain Houston and Solo Learning talks with Elliott Massie about changes and new strategies in the world of learning.
Recently we asked certain team members to participate in a poll and answer the question “What is your favorite ice cream?” This was the first time we have asked for contributions from some of the team members to participate with an article. Thanks to everyone in the office for your participation with this.
Sometimes when we take something that we enjoy and apply that same theory to something that might be actually more important but less thought about, we begin to open up and accept the varying methods of that more important opportunity. Although I am sure some will argue that eating ice cream is just about the best opportunity on earth. Feel free to share your own story in a comment.
I will start with the response from our very own IT Administrator, Taff Morse. Taff is responsible for making sure our student and private networks are running smoothly and for making sure all of our classrooms are setup and ready for our clients come class day. Be it a proprietary software that needs to be installed or a server being set up in the room Taff is the one responsible for all these duties and more.
I would have to say that my favorite kind of ice cream is actually an ice cream cookie. The kind with two large chocolate chips cookies and a thick layer of vanilla ice cream in the middle. Now that may sound pretty normal. Many people do like them during the warm months of summer in my home town in Wisconsin. However, I myself like them the most on a nice cold winter day. The local convenience store manager would always comment on me buying them while on break from work. I think she kept them in stock just for me during the winter.
- Taff Morse, IT Administrator
Our second response is from Sarah Michael. Sarah has been with ExecuTrain Houston for over 6 years and is the “go to” gal for anything and everything within our team. Confirming dates for classroom rentals, creating public class schedules, making sure the clients stay is as pleasant and professional as possible, Sarah has it under control.
My favorite ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough I like it because it has a variety of flavors and reminds me of spending time with my family back home. Each Sunday after church we would go out to eat and stop at Dairy Queen on our way home to get ice cream.
- Sarah Michael, Operations Manager
Our next response is from Kaylin Caulkins. Kaylin is the first voice you will hear when you call ExecuTrain Houston. When you book your classroom rental or attend a public Microsoft class at our facility Kaylin will be your liaison and help and assist you in anyway possible.
My favorite ice cream is a sundae loaded with sprinkles and chocolate syrup because in elementary school we had sundae parties for perfect attendance. I used to remember going home from school after each party that I went to cover in stains from the ice cream and toppings. The best memories that I have from that is my mother’s reactions to the relatively new clothing that would come home in ruins.
- Kaylin Caulkins, Operations Assistant
Our final response will be from Brandon Cook. Brandon is one of our Learning Advisors and is the newest team member. Brandon has been tasked with identifying new business opportunities for ExecuTrain Houston for Microsoft Office public classes as well as classroom rentals. If you haven’t already, you may be getting a call from this first-class salesmen. We have a lot of new opportunities we want to share with you while being your resource.
Favorite Ice Cream: Cheesecake
Why I Like It: Reminds of the real thing
I don’t eat ice cream very often, maybe four times a year. Those are the times that I go with my nieces. They usually get bubble gum or cotton candy. My best story about ice cream was when my niece who is 2 decided that she did not want her ice cream and wanted mine. She was just getting over a cold when she decided that she wanted me to share with her. As I began using her spoon for her, I was distracted by a conversation when my niece decided to use her hand to share by placing the ice cream on my face and then eventually over my clothes. Safe to say now I don’t let her sit in my lap anymore when we eat ice cream.
- Brandon Cook, Learning Advisor
The point to asking the team this fun question was to use it as a comparison as to how people like to learn. “What is your favorite way to learn?” could easily replace “what is your favorite ice cream?” as could any number of things.
I think just as diverse as these answers are above, how each of us learn can be just as spotted. Certain people insist that they learn best in a classroom environment by instructor-led training, while others insist that computer-based training is the best. Still others say that they have to have a big thick book to absorb the learning.
In days of yore, ice cream only came in a handful of flavors, just as learning did. Today I like to think of ExecuTrain Houston as the Marble Slab of learning. Tell us what you want to learn and how you want to learn it and we will mash it up and make it the yummiest tasting learning you have ever had! We still serve vanilla too.
